Mitsune

Mitsune, a Berlin-based ensemble, fuses traditional Japanese folk with psychedelic, cinematic, and ritual music. Led by two female shamisen players, the group also includes percussion and bass, creating modern folklore with driving beats and raw emotion. Their multicultural lineup features musicians from Japan, Australia, and Greece. Praise for their work has come from Rolling Stone and Songlines magazine, who describe them as an "ensemble with an ocean of potential." Their 2022 album Hazama entered the Transglobal World Music Chart's Top 10 and was nominated for the German Record Critic's Prize. A follow-up is scheduled for release in 2025. Their sound can be categorized as Shamisen, Avantgarde, Alternative, Dance, Min'yo, Japanese Folklore, Neo-Traditional.
