Phelimuncasi's music is deeply rooted in the enchanting and potent storytelling tradition of southern African toyi-toyi, a dance of protest and struggle accompanied by rhythmic singing. This musical style, rich with history, was used during anti-apartheid demonstrations to intimidate authorities.
