Mitsune, a Berlin-based quartet, fuses traditional Japanese folk with psychedelic, cinematic, and ritual music, creating unique compositions that rejuvenate ancient tales. Led by two female shamisen players, the group incorporates percussion and bass, offering modern folklore infused with driving beats, raw emotion, and elaborate costumes. The multinational ensemble, comprising musicians from Japan, Australia, and Greece, has garnered international acclaim, earning praise from Rolling Stone and Songlines magazine ("consistently excellent", "an ensemble with an ocean of potential"). Their 2022 album Hazama reached the Transglobal World Music Chart's Top 10 and was nominated for the German Record Critic's Prize, with a new release anticipated in 2025.
